Finland will not run out of fuel, but supply must be guaranteed also in the future

Finland has many times more fuel in storage than it needs during the strikes. So there is no need to worry about running out of fuel, and no need to hoard. Now that the industrial action is dragging on, we should take steps to ensure that the supply of fuel will also remain stable in the future, before any disruptions occur. The National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA) is therefore of the opinion that the strike limits for fuel supply should be revised.

Under no circumstances will the NESA take a position on the causes of the disruption. Instead, it will seek to manage the impact of the situation on security of supply as a neutral actor. The NESA has communicated to the Industrial Union on the need for security of supply in fuel distribution, and the discussions are ongoing. Issues related to security of supply have been resolved by mutual agreement in the past, and fuel distribution should also be addressed by reviewing the strike limits.

“We are not a negotiating party in this matter; instead, as the authority responsible for security of supply, we have made our insights, our assessment of the situation and our expertise in security of supply available to the unions. There is currently no acute problem with fuel distribution, but a prolonged strike will naturally increase the risks. Therefore, it would be important to set the strike limits in such a way that no problems arise,” says Janne Känkänen, CEO of the National Emergency Supply Agency.

The National Emergency Supply Agency will assess the situation and the additional measures needed in the near future.
