Overall situational picture of security of supply, 12 August 2026 – African swine fever does not pose a threat to Finland’s security of supply at present

The operational capacity of companies critical to security of supply and overall security of supply remain primarily stable. Challenges relating to the reliability of raw material and component supplies are causing some uncertainty for companies. The restrictive measures imposed as a result of African swine fever are hindering agriculture and forestry in the affected area.

The Iran conflict has not caused any major challenges regarding the availability of products so far, but rising costs and longer delivery times are causing uncertainty. As the conflict continues, the volatile market situation is set to persist.

The heatwave and drought in Europe have also hindered transports, driven up freight costs and disrupted industrial deliveries. Weather conditions have been conducive to wildfires, which have also caused e.g. damage to crops.

A total of 19 cases of African swine fever have been detected in wild boars in Virolahti since the end of July. To prevent the spread of the disease, the Finnish Food Authority has established an infected zone in the area. At its current scale, the African swine fever outbreak does not pose a threat to Finland’s security of supply, but regionally, the impact on agriculture and forestry is significant.

The grain harvest is about to begin in Finland and the harvest forecast is reasonably good in terms of volume. The final yield depends on the weather conditions during the harvest season, among other factors.
