Overall situational picture of security of supply: Security of supply is stable

The situational picture of security of supply has remained stable compared to the previous week. Concerns are caused by interruptions in the availability of medication and the potato harvest, which is expected to be poor.

The overall situational picture of security of supply compiled by the National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA) examines the challenges in the operating environment from several perspectives. The situational picture report includes an overview of different industries’ ability to function and the challenges they may face.

As of 13 October, the NESA is shifting to compiling the situational picture on a weekly basis, with the next situational picture scheduled to be published on 3 November.

The NESA releases a brief summary of the situational picture report. The details concerning industries are classified and are therefore not made public.

Situational picture on 27 October: Interruptions in the availability of medication throughout Europe

The security of supply status has remained stable compared to the previous week.

The status of Finland’s gas system is stable, and gas supply has been secured from the LNG terminal in Inkoo. The terminal has the capacity and ability to provide the gas Finland needs for the coming winter. On the other hand, the development and impacts of the situation in the Middle East have caused uncertainty with regard to energy prices.

Significant acts of sabotage or suspicious activities targeting infrastructure have not been observed.

Several media outlets in Åland suffered an aggressive denial-of-service attack on the night of 15 October as results were being tabulated in the regional elections of Åland.

There have been a great deal of interruptions in the availability of medication, which is why the European Union, the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) released measures this week to help secure the availability of critical medications.

Due to the prolonged rainfall, a significant portion of the potato harvest would seem to fail to ripen in the primary potato production area on the west coast. Securing seed potato for the coming year is a challenge.
